Properties of Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium oxide (chemical formula: MgO) is an oxide of magnesium, an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of periclase and is the raw material for magnesium smelting.
Properties: White amorphous powder. It is odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. Because of the different preparation methods, there are light weight and heavy weight. It has strong refractivity in the visible and near-ultraviolet light range. It is easy to absorb water and carbon dioxide in exposed air and gradually become basic magnesium carbonate. Light weight is faster than heavy weight. It combines with water to form magnesium hydroxide, which is slightly alkaline and saturated with water at pH 10.3. However, it is very soluble in dilute acid and very slightly soluble in pure water, and its solubility is increased by the presence of carbon dioxide. It is a mild catalyst. It is insoluble in ethanol. The relative density (d254) was 3.58. The melting point is 2852 C. Boiling point 3600 C.
Purpose: To determine sulfur and arsenic in coal, pyrite and steel. Standard for white pigments.
It is used as an anti-acid and anti-ulcer drug, an antiacid and a laxative. The acid resistance is stronger, slower and longer than that of sodium bicarbonate, which does not produce carbon dioxide. It reacts with gastric acid to produce magnesium chloride, releases magnesium ions, stimulates intestinal peristalsis, and has the effect of mild diarrhea. It is suitable for patients with hyperacidity and gastric and duodenal ulcer accompanied by constipation. For those without constipation, its diarrhea effect can be corrected by calcium carbonate.
